Guwahati University lecturer gets life term imprisonment for murder of student

A Sessions court here has awarded life sentence to a Gauhati University lecturer, who was accused of murdering a student of the same university in 2010. The lecturer, one Birlang Narzary, had allegedly murdered the girl after she declined to marry him.

Narzary, a lecturer in the department of Modern Indian Languages, was arrested on January 24, 2010 after he surrendered to the police and confessed to the crime.

According to the police, Narzary had attacked the student repeatedly with a hammer inside his official quarter on the university campus.

He then surrendered before the police. Kamrup (Metro) additional sessions judge Utpal Prasad, while holding Narzary guilty of the crime, sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which he will have to undergo an additional imprisonment term of six months.
