Jailed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday night while they were being taken for a medical test.

In television footage, Atiq Ahmed, accompanied by his brother, was seen talking to reporters when at least two men with pistols opened fire. This comes barely days after his son, 19-year-old Asad Ahmed, was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force. Asad Ahmed was laid to rest earlier on Saturday.

The bullet-riddled bodies of Atiq and Ashraf were taken away from the spot as tension gripped the area after the sensational killing. Both of them had been brought here for a court hearing in connection with the 2005 Umesh Pal murder case.
