A crime journalist becomes a murder suspect — quite a scoop, isn’t it? Hansal Mehta’s next, which is inspired by Jigna Vora’s memoir ‘Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison’, delves into the same. Rightly titled ‘Scoop’, the show stars Karishma Tanna, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Harman Baweja Prosenjit Chatterjee, among others.

Netflix dropped the trailer of Scoop on Monday, which brings fore the story of an ace crime reporter Jagruti (Tanna), who gets a call from a dreaded gangster (Chhota Rajan). The harrowing sequence of events that follows, including the murder of another journalist, leaves her as a prime suspect. She is soon pushed into jail and left to fight her battles alone. The trailer also showcases society’s rush to judgment as Jagruti is caught between the nexus of the police, the underworld, and the media.

The trailer definitely will leave chills down the spine of most crime journalists, who go all out for that one ‘breaking story’. Karishma Tanna, who has been missing from the screen for a long time, gives her career-best performance as she switches between the highs of her career to dealing with all kinds of torture in custody. It’s also heartening to see Harman Baweja back, playing a police officer, who already believes Jagruti is the culprit.

Speaking about creating the first season of Scoop, director and co-creator Hansal Mehta in a statement said, “As a filmmaker, my intention is to always tell stories that go beyond a weekend. In Scoop, I found that: a story that speaks urgently to our post-truth times. Season one is just the beginning. I hope to keep exploring the story-rich world of media even further.”

Monika Shergill, Vice President – Content – Netflix India added, “Scoop brings to life the high stakes world of crime reporting through a dynamic and driven journalist, Jagruti Pathak. Inspired by real events, it’s a powerful, untold story of the unexpected cost of ambition that can make a victim out of a winner in a second. Scoop with its powerhouse performances and bingeable drama will be a defining series for all audiences in India.”

Produced by Matchbox Shots and created by Hansal Mehta and Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul, the series will drop on Netflix on June 2.

Who is Jigna Vora?

Jigna Vora was a senior journalist with The Asian Age and wrote on the underworld and crime. She was arrested on November 25, 2011 from Ghatkopar for being part of the conspiracy hatched to kill senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. He was murdered by unidentified assailants in 2011 in Maharashtra’s Powai, while onlookers witnessed the incident.

The Mumbai Police, then had maintained that they had ‘prima facie’ evidence of her involvement. According to the 3,055-page chargesheet filed by them, Vora had instigated fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan to kill Dey due to professional rivalry. She was acquitted in 2019, after it was observed that there is no direct evidence to implicate Vora in the case.
