‘Suriya doesn’t have to be taller than what he is…’ says Bobby Deol about his Kanguva co-star’s height

National Award winner Suriya is awaiting the release of his big-budget fantasy entertainer Kanguva, and is doing extensive promotions for the film, which is billed to be his most expensive film to date. While there is an outpouring of love for the actor wherever he goes, he has also been on the receiving end of trolls targeting his height. In fact, in his 2017 film, Thaana Saerndha Koottam, Suriya addressed these incessant trolls and spoke about how physical height isn’t as important as the heights of personal and professional growth. Such trolls resurfaced when images of him as a fierce warrior in Kanguva were released on social media.

During the present promotional drive, Suriya, on more than one occasion, spoke about his physicality. “I don’t have the physique of Prabhas or Rana from Baahubali. So, I made it up with the commitment and performance,” said Suriya. However, when he went on this self-deprecating spiral, and said something similar about his Kanguva co-star Bobby Deol in an interview with ANI, the latter immediately showcased his largesse. “I think the kind of actor Suriya is, he doesn’t have to be taller than what he is, because he stands so tall that he is mightier than ones around him. I was amazed by his performance, and he does all his stunts on his own,” said Bobby, even as an emotional Suriya reached out to him in a gesture of gratitude for his kind words.

We are seeing a new Suriya in the promotional rounds for Kanguva. He is opening up like never before, and is wearing his emotions on his sleeve. Kanguva marks his first theatrical release in over two years, and he is going all out to promote the Siva directorial, which is set to release in two parts. Talking about doing different kinds of films in his career, Suriya said, “I take inspiration from Kamal sir. How did he even do Aboorva Sagodharargal? How did he want to do Marudhanayagam? Whenever he falls, he jumps back. Whenever he is falling flat, he won’t compromise and do an ‘ordinary’ film. He will bounce back with something we haven’t seen before. He won’t do a safe film.”

In the last five years, Suriya played the lead in just one theatrical release, Etharkkum Thunindhavan, and had a cameo in Kamal Haasan’s Vikram, and two straight-to-OTT films, Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim. “During COVID-19, I couldn’t release Aakasam Nee Haddu ra (Soorarai Pottru) or Jai Bhim in the theatres. I wanted to give all the theatre owners and the theatre audience a never-seen-before experience. I am waiting for everyone who loves good cinema to watch Kanguva.”

Backed by KE Gnanavel Raja’s Studio Green, Kanguva marks the Tamil debuts of Bobby Deol and Disha Patani. With music by Devi Sri Prasad and cinematography by Vetri, Kanguva is set to hit the screens on November 14.
