The second part of Mani Ratnam’s epic-drama Ponniyin Selvan was released in the theaters on Friday and received a good response from the audience, which can be seen in the film’s opening day numbers. The film opened with an overall domestic collection of Rs 32 crore.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, Ponniyin Selvan 2 earned Rs 32 crore on Friday with 59.94% Tamil occupancy, 10.20% Hindi occupancy and 33.23% Malayalam occupancy. Film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan noted, “Good opening day for #PonniyinSelvan2 at the TN BO. Movie takes SECOND best opening of the year in the state by BEATING #Varisu. #Thunivu still holds the FIRST place for 2023.” Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu grossed Rs 26.5 crore on day one of release, across India.
Ramesh Bala shared that the epic drama also got a good start in USA as he tweeted, “#PonniyinSelvan2 debuts at No.3 in USA 🇺🇸 Top 10 for Thursday.. (Premieres).” He also shared that the film opened well even in Malaysia, Singapore and UAE.
The first part of the film, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy, had got a humongous start when it was released in September 2022. It got the biggest-ever opening for a Tamil film as it made Rs 80 crore globally. Overall, it ended its run in theaters with a gross collection of more than Rs 500 crore worldwide. Now, with positive word of mouth, PS2 is expected to have a successful run in the theaters.
Indianexpress.com’s Kirubhakar gave the film a 4-star rating. In his review, he wrote, “After watching Ponniyin Selvan 2, one can say that the first part was Mani’s way of introducing and establishing the epic, where he didn’t shy away from using screen time for lavish song sequences. In the second part, he is bolder and deviates majorly from the books. Here, Mani Ratnam, the filmmaker, is more faithful to his craft than to the written material. This makes Ponniyin Selvan 2 better cinema, and superior to its first part.”
