Dies Irae is one of the most anticipated Indian horror films of the year, the follow-up directorial project for Rahul Sadasivan, the genre auteur behind Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam. Like his previous three films, Dies Irae also feels like a tone poem with psychological and horror undertones. The film starring Pranav Mohanlal in the lead role, which had its trailer premiere on Wednesday, offers some intrigue with the kind of creeping, background horror imagery that Rahul is famous for in his films. There is no visible threat or disfigured ghosts in his work, and all you get are the psychological bruises and trauma signifiers that manifest in survivors of a tragedy.

The rest of the supporting cast for the film has not yet been revealed, and the trailer shows us glimpses of Pranav’s character encountering Dies Irae, which translates to ‘the day of wrath’, and feels like a nightmarish odyssey of a traumatized man followed around by an elusive spirit. The film retains the technical department heads from Bramayugam with a musical score by Christo Xavier and cinematography by Shehnad Jalal. Dies Irae‘ will be released worldwide on October 31st as a Halloween release.
