War 2 movie release and box office collection Highlights

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR-starrer War 2, produced by Yash Raj Films, earned Rs 46.28 crore by 8 p.m. on Friday, taking its total collection at the Indian box office to Rs 97.78 crore.

War 2, directed by Ayan Mukherji, is so limp that you are left looking for zing. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Ayan Mukerji directoral War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani in pivotal roles, collected Rs 64.29 crore as of 1 p.m. on Friday.

It's long but do read till the end: Since morning I've been seeing tweets bashing the movie, including critics who gave it a very low rating. I told myself - if so many people are bashing the film it must be really bad. I had booked tickets for the movie already and was contemplating if I should skip it. But with my track record of liking some movies that were panned by others, I thought - let me not trust any of these reviews or tweets and go with an open mind. So, I went to watch the film. It opened with Hrithik's entry in some exotic location with a fancy sword fight but it was lifeless. The film felt flat and I was half convinced that everyone was right. And then entered Jr. NTR's character with a tiger's roar thrown in occasionally in the BGM and I felt these guys are trying too hard. I was 75% convinced that the film was bad. And then came a chase sequence set in Spain which caught my attention. People complain about the VFX but it was within my span of believability. My meter started running in reverse from this point - it came down to 50%. The next few scenes and the pre-interval sequence reset my meter completely. I was hooked to the film the moment I saw the actor in Jr. NTR come out. The film started growing on me already which was a surprise to me. The second half surprised me further by giving the characters the proper emotional arc that is required for an audience to get invested in the story. The film kept getting better and better by the minute and by the time it came to the climax and the post climax scenes I really enjoyed the film."

Kartik continued, "The film is emotionally sophisticated and that's where Ayan Mukerji's strengths came into play. It's unlike any regular action-packed commercial potboiler. The film had a core theme and character goals and motivations, and it stuck to the plan and delivered in style. Jr. NTR made a bold choice to play this role but it's a gamble worth taking. I doubt if he'd get to play a character like this in a straight Telugu film. Glad he did this. Hrithik has the Tom Cruise quality of being vulnerable and strong at the same time and he was really good. Kiara was excellent too."

He concluded, "I mentioned the word sophisticated earlier and it's not just the story but everything about the film exudes class. I especially loved the way the film ended. It was such an emotionally satisfying arc, and also the possibilities for the future look exciting. Many call this the weakest film in the YRF SPY Franchise, but I beg to differ - it's a worthy addition to the list and probably one of my favourites in terms of the cohesiveness of the story and the class with which it is handled. I would say, the film will continue to gain momentum in the coming days, and the word of mouth will be very positive, especially in the north - it already shows in the overall BMS ratings. So, go watch the film. Be a little patient at first and then the film will grow on you."

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani in key roles, collected Rs 60.83 crore as of 12 p.m. on Friday.

As per the industry tracker Sacnilk, the film made Rs 52.5 crore on its opening day of release, and while that number sounds almost as good as Pathaan, it is indeed concerning. Out of the Rs 52.5 crore, the Hindi share is just Rs 29 crore, and the Telugu share is Rs 23.25 crore. READ MORE

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 is trailing far behind Rajinikanth’s Coolie. The War sequel has earned only Rs 28.65 crore, compared to Coolie’s Rs 44.22 crore.

Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's War 2 is getting love but with some caveats. A fan shared their War 2 review, "What’s good: Hrithik and Jr NTR have great chemistry.The movie looks grand, with stylish sets and big action moments.First half is fun and energetic. What’s not so good: Story is predictable and not very deep.Some action scenes and VFX look fake.Second half slows down."

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani in pivotal roles, has minted Rs 21.42 crore as of 4 pm on Thursday.

War 2 has received largely mixed reviews. A fan shared War 2 review on X, "Hrithik and Jr NTR delivered powerhouse performances—their chemistry is the soul of the film. Kiara did well but had limited scope. Ashutosh Rana and Anil Kapoor added solid weight.Cameos by Tiger, Disha, SRK, and John brought instant excitement to the screen."

After crossing the Rs 10 crore mark in morning shows, War 2 has minted Rs 19.49 crore by 3 pm, according to Sacnilk. The film, starring Hrithik Roshan, Kiara Advani, and Jr NTR in lead roles, is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 300-400 crore.

Accordingto reports, Anil Kapoor plays the role of new R&AW chief after the death of Colonel Karan Luthra, played by Ashutosh Rana in the original War film (2019). Ashutosh also played the same character in other films of YRF's spy universe -  Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Salman Khan’s Tiger 3. Before War 2, Anil shared screen with Hrithik Roshan in Fighter.

A comment read, "#WAR2 - A MISFIRE! Rating: ???? WAR 2 starts off on an interesting note with exciting entry sequences of both the leads, and has some interesting moments in the first half that keep you engaged but loses the grip in the 2nd half and goes haywire. #AyanMukerji missed the golden opportunity here. #HrithikRoshan gives his all to this film. Another fan called out the bad VFX of the film and called it Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR-starrer's biggest flaw. The commnet read, 'A complete entertainer that blends high Octane action with strong emotional beats. The biggest Drawback of the film is VFX #HrithikRoshan #JnrNTR.'

Many fans took to social media to point out the shoddy VFX job in War 2. A fan even called Jr NTR's 6-pack abs in the film fake. The comment read, "Bro ? this scene looks like the VFX team used an expired Photoshop trial. The lighting doesn’t match, the skin texture feels copy-pasted, and the abs look like they came straight out of a 2010 video game cutscene #War2 #War2Review 1/10 for this ??."

The India Express film critic Shubhra Gupta gave War 2 1.5 star and wrote in her review, "War 2, directed by another Yashraj regular Ayan Mukherji, is so limp that you are left looking for zing. At the previous War 2 event, Hrithik Roshan praised Jr NTR's dancing skills and said, “He is incredible; I mean, that man is such a champ, He is the first co-actor that I have worked with that does not need rehearsals when he dances. It is absolutely incredible (that) he has every step inside him already."

At a previous War 2, Jr NTR praised his co-star Hrithik Roshan and admitted admiring his work. He said, “I think mine and Hrithik Roshan garu's careers started at the same time. When I watched Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai long back, I went mad. He is one of the greatest dancers in the country right now. My journey started off by admiring him. After all these years, I got the chance to act and dance with him.”

He added, “This is not a movie of NTR going to Hindi cinema. It is actually Hrithik sir coming into Telugu cinema. Thanks to my family, fans, and everyone for blessing me. I am here today because of you.”

Fans have called out bad VFX shoots in War 2. A user wrote, "Worst vfx in history of cinema ??#War2." Another one wrote, "Coming to VFX, it's pathetic! Being the biggest production house producing the most hyped sequel with two big superstars, what the hell did you spend 400cr on??? @yrf VFX literally diluted impact in most of the action scenes! Big production house is expected to deliver better quality movies not just a better management of theatres!"

A fan called out War 2 for weak VFX shoots and at the same time missed the presence of Tiger Shroff, who played a key role in War (2019). He wrote, "#War2Review - ????? It's not 10% Of #Tiger3 , Bad VFX With Poor Performance, #TigerShroff  Is The Back Bone Of War 1 But Here Only Cringe & Cringe. #War2 Can't Cross The Hindi Collection Of #Tiger3 , Unbelievable ?"

According to Sacnilk, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's film has raked in Rs 8.36 crore till 10am. The film is made on a reported budget of Rs 300-400 crore.

Fans watching War 2 in theatres have taken to social media to share an exciting detail -- the next film in the Yash Raj Films spy universe after War 2 will be Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. The film also features Bobby Deol in a key role. The makers of War 2 have included a post-credit scene revealing Bobby’s look from Alpha, where he is seen inking the logo of the secret agency on a young girl’s hand -- who is presumably Alia Bhatt’s character.

Fans have shared their excitement after seeing Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR shake-a-leg in War 2 song "Janaabe Aali." Praising them, a fan wrote "Janaabe Aali is Ntr's Best Duet song after Naatu Naatu. Trade analyst Sumit Kadel called Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's film War 2, Yash Raj Films' weakest spy film till date. He also compared it to YRF's Thugs of Hindostan, which was a major box office failure. He even went to predict that Hrithik's film will be a 'huge flop'.

He wrote, "#War2  IS A FIASCO - a “Thugs of Hindostan” moment for YRF. RATING - ??? ( 1.5 Stars ) When you have two of the biggest superstars from North and South  - #NTR  #HrithikRoshan and a budget of ?300–400 Cr & yet you deliver such a weak film, in my eyes it’s nothing less than a sin. In terms of content and quality, this will go down as the weakest film in the Spy Universe."

Sumit called out the film's shoddy VFX shots and terrible graphics, calling it 'downright shameful'. "For most parts, the VFX of War 2 can’t even compete with PlayStation 3 video games," he wrote.

He added, "#JrNTR’s fans will likely be very disappointed, as he did not get the kind of elevation he deserved. His character [ Raghu ] has been written far more weakly compared to Hrithik’s. The entry sequence that should have been his highlight is a complete misfire, and in the second half, he is totally wasted. Though he acted very well, his dialogue delivery and hindi is on point."

He called Ayan Mukerji's direction poor and also blamed film's writer - Sridhar Raghavan - for a lacklustre script. He wrote, "The film’s writer, Sridhar Raghavan, sank Tiger 3 and has now damaged the future of the Spy Universe with War 2."

He added, "Overall, War 2 fails on every front. It stands nowhere in comparison to #Pathaan, #War, or #EkThaTiger, and is even weaker than #Tiger3. The film has neither style nor substance. At the box office, this film will be a huge flop. If it even manages average business in both North and South markets, that will be an achievement in itself."

Sumit Kadel wrote, "#NTR single-handedly saving the day for #War2. Super Strong bookings pouring in across Telugu States purely on the strength of his stardom . Day 1 AP & TS collections set to match , or come close to  the entire Hindi Day 1 biz across India."

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared his review of War 2 and called it 'dull'. He wrote, "#OneWordReview #War2 : DULL Rating: ??? A letdown... Screenplay, music, direction, even performances are lacklustre. Sky-high expectations from #HrithikRoshan - #AyanMukerji ,but all that glitters is not gold! #war2Review #war2 is among #HrithikRoshan 's weakest spy  films ?."

Jr NTR enjoys a massive following among the Telugu audience. In a viral video, a fan is seen applying tilak on Jr NTR's War 2 poster with his own blood. Viral Bhayani shared the clip and wrote, "Insane FAN-FOLLOWING of NTR & Insane HYPE of War 2 as fans put ‘blood tilak’ on NTR’s poster ahead of his massive pan Indian release #War2.. with PURE DEVOTION & MADNESS ?."  

Fans have taken to social media to laud Jr NTR's performance in War 2 and especially his goosebump inducing entry scene. Praising the actor, a fan wrote, "#JrNTR??‍? delivers pure goosebumps His entry is a total banger? That vibe every time he’s on screen? Whether it’s mass or class, the way he emotes is absolute cinema? BGM hits hard for NTR HR entry? NTR looks??‍? Entry rap song? #SalamAnali ramp??‍? Face off b/n NTR & HR? #War2."

The screening of War 2 was organised on Wednesday and was attended by many Bollywood celebrities. While Hrithik Roshan attended the screening with girlfriend Saba Azad, Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor arrived together for the screening. Tiger Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and the film's director Ayan Mukerji were also seen at the screening.

A fan wrote on X, “#War2 An okayish action entertainer. Not great, not bad either – strictly MID. Note: #NTR fans should keep their expectations in check. There are moments where you whistle, but also moments that will frustrate you. The ending sort of pulls it back, and you walk out of the theatre feeling somewhat satisfied.”

Jr NTR fans were seen bursting crackers, dancing to DJ music, and cheering for him after War 2’s release. Visuals of the celebration are going viral, showing fans dancing to his hit songs as tall cut-outs of the actor surround them. War 2 marks Jr NTR’s debut in the Hindi film industry, where he plays a negative role. The film also stars Hrithik Roshan and Kiara Advani in lead roles.

While Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 clashed with Rajinikanth’s Coolie at the box office, the actor took to X to congratulate the superstar on completing 50 years in cinema. He wrote, “Took my first steps as an actor at your side. You were one of my first teachers, @rajinikanth sir, and continue to be an inspiration and a standard. Congratulations on completing 50 years of on-screen magic!” Hrithik had worked as a child actor in Rajinikanth’s 1986 film Bhagwaan Dada.

A user wrote on X, “#War2 is a strictly mediocre action thriller, leaning heavily on style over substance! The storyline is somewhat different from the previous spy universe films, which had potential but wasn’t able to fully capitalize on it. Though the storyline might vary, the tempo of the other films remains the same, which makes it feel pretty ordinary and routine.”

Lauding Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s performances in the climax sequence, he added, “Both lead actors performed their roles well and were apt for their characters, but nothing they haven’t done before. Their performances in the climax stand out.” However, he called the VFX shots in the film “shoddy,” but added that it was “better than Yash Raj Films’ Tiger.”
