Remember those lines that the protagonist and antagonist exchange with each other before the final showdown where everyone knows what’s going to happen, and yet we sit through it? Interestingly, in one of 2023’s biggest successes, Animal, the primary villain doesn’t utter a single word. In an interview with Komal Nahta, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga opened up about why he decided to sketch Bobby Deol’s character as a hearing-impaired and speech-impaired person.
“We have seen a lot of films where the hero and villain pick up the phone and abuse each other, or there is some sort of dialoguebaazi throughout the film,” said Sandeep, who subverted this template by completely doing away with this idea. Incidentally, in Animal, Bobby enters much later into the film as the first half goes in establishing the animalistic nature of Ranbir Kapoor’s character, and his undying and unrequited love for his father, played by Anil Kapoor.
With such a strong emotional core holding the film together, and with every dialogue being measured and yet over-the-top when required, the decision to play down the dialoguebaazi aspect of Bobby Deol is quite a bold choice. “Since we have seen a lot of such exchanges in our films, I just thought of sketching him as a mute and a deaf person. The very idea of a deaf-and-mute person fighting in the climax was such an exciting idea,” said Sandeep, who also received some criticism about the extended climax sequence that oscillated between serious and unintentionally funny.
Since Animal, Bobby Deol has been having a solid run in Indian cinema, especially in the South. He has already played the antagonist in marquee films like Suriya’s Kanguva and Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaaj, and is currently part of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s swansong, Jananayagan.
On the other hand, Sandeep Reddy Vanga has moved on to his next titled Spirit, which marks his maiden collaboration with Prabhas. The cop drama is said to be made on a huge budget, and has zoomed right to the top to become one of the most-awaited Indian films because of the blockbuster combination of Vanga and Prabhas, who are a bonafide pan-Indian phenomenon. Apart from Spirit, Prabhas has an interesting line-up of films including The Raja Saab, Fauji, Salaar 2, and Kalki 2.
