Director Karan Johar described Rocky Randhawa from his film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani as an even more ‘over-the-top’ version of actor Ranveer Singh, who is known for his flamboyant personal style and public persona. Ranveer plays Rocky in the romantic comedy-drama, which also stars Alia Bhatt as the opinionated Rani Chatterjee.
In a new interview with Film Companion, Karan said that Ranveer isn’t always as boisterous as he seems. The actor accompanied Karan to a three-week recce for the film in New Delhi, even though he didn’t really have to be there. He mulled over the finer details of Rocky for 10 hours at a time, Karan said.
Recalling an anecdote about Ranveer’s first shot as Rocky, he said, “The first day we shot with him in character was the scene where he meets Rani in the office. By mistake, he had a feeling that we were shooting another scene. And he was like, ‘Oh, I’m not prepped for this scene. This is my biggest scene, I’m meeting Rani for the first time’. I realised he was very hyper, so I went up to him and asked, ‘What happened?’ He’s like, ‘You know when you’ve prepared for history but someone tells you the exam is geography, that’s what I’m feeling right now’.”
Karan said that he called for a break, and told Ranveer to take four hours to prepare. “He came back, did the scene, boom, it was done. And when were were on the monitor, I was like, ‘God, he’s got it’.” Karan also appreciated the performance of actor Abhinav Sharma, who plays Rocky’s best friend Vicky in that scene, and said that Alia was ‘organically reacting’ to their antics on camera.
Also starring Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Aamir Bashir, Tota Roy Chowdhury and others, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has received mostly positive reviews, and has made more than Rs 50 crore in India in four days.
