Veteran actor Pankaj Kapur said that he might be dissatisfied as an artiste, but as a human being, he is happy with what he has. In an interview, he said that he never had lofty ambitions, and that he is aware his contemporaries probably have more money than he does, but he continues to live a ‘middle class life’ in Mumbai. He also said that he prayed for one thing when he experienced the peak of fame in the 1990s, and that his wish came true: he is recognised in public, but not to the extend that his life is upended because of it.

In a Punjabi interview with SMTV, he said that he 99.9% content, but feels slightly discontent because he wasn’t offered the kind of lead roles that proper stars would be. “I lead a good, middle-class life in Bombay,” he said, and repeated himself twice for effect. “I am a humble actor, not a star. I am so grateful for the abilities that I have been bestowed with. They have helped me lead a respectable life.”

Asked if he hasn’t made as much money as his contemporaries, the veteran said, “I am sure of it. I have been very selective, and I haven’t worked as much as they have. I knew what kind of work I wanted to do.” He said that he lives comfortably by Mumbai standards, and was asked if he has ever been in a position where he has had to borrow money from others, including his children. “Thankfully, I have been able to stand on my own two feet,” he said.

The veteran actor explained why he isn’t bitter or resentful about how successful he has been compared to others, and said, “I never wanted what others wanted. All I wanted was to be able to act, and that I did. I never wanted six cars and 12 houses. I have enough. I wanted a house, and I have one. I have gone with the flow. Not to say that I have been foolish and turned down work when I needed the money, because I have done work for money as well.”

In the same interview, the actor recalled his journey as an actor, and said that he owes a lot of his success to his father, who was unwavering in his support at a time when it was almost unheard of for a ‘five-foot-two teenager from Ludhiana’ to dream of going to Mumbai to become an actor. In his career, Pankaj Kapur has appeared in acclaimed films such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Ek Doctor Ki Maut, Maqbool, and Raakh. He also played lead roles in iconic shows such as Office Office and Karamchand.
