Navya Nanda says brother Agastya Nanda can ‘make tea when guests come over’ because they were raised as equals

Navya Nanda had previously said that she has experienced ingrained sexism at home, while her mother Shweta Bachchan had admitted that she hasn't raised her two children 'even-handedly'.

Navya Naveli Nanda, who once spoke about the ingrained sexism that she experiences at home, has now said that household duties are divided equally between her and her brother, Agastya Nanda. Navya and Agastya are the grandchildren of actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, but they mostly grew up in New Delhi, where they live with their parents.

In a recent interview with Josh Talks, Navya said that she is grateful to have grown up in an egalitarian environment, which has only become more pronounced now that both she and her brother have started making their own money. Navya is a social entrepreneur, while Agastya is on the verge of making his acting debut.

Asked about an earlier comment she made about about handling the finances at home, Navya said in Hindi, “I’ll tell you something my grandmother told me, which I’ll always remember. She said that women are the best entrepreneurs, they are born with management skills… A housewife’s job at home is no different from what a CEO of a company does… My mother has raised me and my brother in a similar way.”

She continued, “The responsibility of financing and budgeting was split equally between us. And now that we are both earning independently, we understand the value of money. I do what my brother does, and he does what I do. I can handle household finances, but if guests are coming over, he can make tea for them.” Previously, in an interview with Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Shweta Bachchan admitted that she hasn’t been ‘even-handed’ in raising her two children. “I’ve been tougher on Navya, because I feel the world isn’t easy on women, and you have to be that much stronger, and that much more vigilant and careful,” she said.

In an interview with SheThePeople, Navya had said, “I have seen this happen at my home where if guests are over, my mother would always tell me to fetch something or the other. I have to play the host as opposed to my brother who could also be doing the same thing.”

Navya is a social entrepreneur who works in the field of women’s health. Agastya is set to make his acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies, due out on Netflix later this year.
