Akshay Kumar’s real life-thriller drama Mission Raniganj released on Friday, with an opening of Rs 2.8 crore. Also starring Parineeti Chopra, the film is based on the incident in West Bengal’s coal minery, where 65 mine workers were rescued after a flood. On Saturday, the film’s collection saw a big jump of almost 69 percent as it netted Rs 4.70 crore. This brings the two-day collection of the Tinu Suresh Desai directorial to Rs 7.5 crore.

However, Mission Raniganj saw only an average of 15.73 percent occupancy in the Hindi market. While night shows had around 24.73 percent audience, evening, afternoon, and morning shows saw 15.8, 13.5, and 10.13 percent occupancy, respectively.

Mission Raniganj was released along Thank You For Coming which is struggling at the box office having earned almost Rs 2.4 crore in two days. On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan continues to be an audience puller while last week’s release Fukrey 3 is also experiencing a celebratory footfall.

Akshay Kumar’s box office trend

For years, Akshay Kumar had developed a reputation for delivering major hits, with most of them crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, if not more, his last being Sooryavanshi, directed by Rohit Shetty. The cop-action film was one of the first films to release post the Covid-19 pandemic, and it earned Rs 120 crore, bringing the audiences back to cinema halls after over a year.

The action-star has been experiencing a lull period since 2022, when his film Bachchhan Paandey (2022) released. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film’s lifelong earnings were Rs 49.98 crore. His subsequent films such as Samrat Prithviraj earned Rs 68.05 crore, Raksha Bandhan made Rs 44.39 crore, Ram Setu folded with Rs 71.87 crore and Selfiee closed at Rs 16.85 crore. However, Akshay’s last release, OMG 2, with Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam in the lead roles, was a blockbuster as it deposited Rs 150.17 crore in the bank.

Coming back to Mission Raniganj, the film opened to a lukewarm response from the audience. Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, “Given the inherent drama in the long-drawn operation, with the family members of the trapped men waiting anxiously, and the patent sincerity with which Akshay plays Gill, ‘Mission Raniganj’ should have been a deeply engrossing human drama. But the way in which the loud background music ratchets up the theatrics, and the manner in which local ‘netas’ and high officials in Calcutta try and scuttle the operation, with each person bearing the bad news running across the screen in exactly the same manner, the film comes off a tiresome plod.”
