Actor Kim Sharma recently opened up about her experience auditioning for Mohabbatein in front of Karan Johar.

Although Kim Sharma marked her acting debut in Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) 2000 romantic drama Mohabbatein, she didn’t receive the best reviews for her performance. Recently, Kim recalled auditioning for the movie in front of Karan Johar, when he bluntly told her she wasn’t skilled to become an actor.

“Moving to films was very incidental,” she shared during a chat with Kunickaa Sadanand on her YouTube channel. “YRF saw a commercial that I had done at that time. They reached out to my mom first, but she didn’t know anything. My mother was clueless, she said no. I was travelling, she didn’t even know where I was.”

The actor added, “But, I got a call personally and then I went. Even I didn’t know the opportunity that was at my door, because films were never my priority. I was very young and going from moment to moment. I was 18 when I signed Mohabbatein.”

Elaborating on her unimpressive audition with Karan Johar, Kim revealed, “I auditioned thrice, one with the assistant director Nikkhil Advani and the second one with Karan (Johar, filmmaker). Life has come full circle for both of us. I work for him in his large organisation now. He took my first audition and I don’t think he was very impressed with me.”

She continued, “He said, ‘Tumhe dance karna nahi aata, dialogue bolna nahi aata; kyun heroine banna chahti ho? (You don’t know how to dance or deliver dialogues; why do you want to become a heroine?)’ Then, I said that I didn’t want to become an actor and that I was just doing this because I was instructed to be there. Nahi hua toh bhi kuch nahi hota. My third audition was taken by Aditya Chopra and he really liked me.”

The actor also revealed that she and her family didn’t know anything about the film industry. “Films weren’t my background, I didn’t know anything. We, as a family, had only watched 2-3 films by then. It was a basic day for me after signing the film; my parents didn’t even congratulate me. Even after meeting Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan, I hadn’t realised the magnitude of the opportunity.”

Kim further shared that she faced several issues when her mentality didn’t match the judgemental nature of the film industry. “After the film was released, I didn’t know what was going on. Why are people being mean, why is networking important, why do I have to be nice, what is PR, I wasn’t aware of anything. As a young teenager, I was a model and used to smoke at that time.”

She further added, “Mai cigarette jala deti thi set par (I used to light cigarettes on the set) and had a tattoo, and my manager was shocked. He told me, ‘You can’t have a tattoo, you are a heroine.’ I was not ready. That business works according to its own rules. I wasn’t given that rule book. There was a lot of resistance, I felt I was rebellious. I have issues with authority. My mom and dad never imposed anything on me. This was the first time I faced gender discrimination.”

When her performance in Mohabbatein received negative reviews after the movie’s release, Kim tackled it by looking at the glass half full. “After the film was released, people had many opinions, both good and bad. I got really bad reviews, people said that ‘she is really terrible’. I thought to myself, ‘Who does that?’ I am not terrible, I am amazing. I find the best way in the worst scenario. I decided to not take them seriously so that I don’t get hurt,” she stated.
