Choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan and renowned playback singer-composer Shaan’s friendship dates back over three decades. Even before they made a name for themselves in their respective fields, the two worked together on Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. While Farah served as the choreographer for the film, Shaan’s contribution wasn’t as a singer but as a background actor in one of the songs. The latest episode of the choreographer-director’s vlog featured Shaan and his family as they took a trip down memory lane, recalling their early career collaborations.
“I was one of the junior dancers on that song. Initially, I served as the assistant director; then, I took over as the choreographer of the film. Then, when we found a shortage of dancers, I was also sent in as a dancer. There’s one shot wherein Deepak Tijori kissed my cheek. The girl who was supposed to appear in that shot said, ‘I am not going to allow him to kiss me.’ So I did that too,” she said. When Shaan revealed that he, nonetheless, got paid Rs 150 a day for working on the movie for four days, only to appear in a passing shot, Farah was left shocked. “You got paid?! I haven’t received any payment for my work in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar to date,” she said.
Unlike her usual vlogs, which are mostly laugh riots, this one had a nostalgic tone — like two old friends catching up. The video commenced with Farah giving her cook Dilip a “Diwali gift.” However, he soon realised that it was one of her tricks and that the gift was nothing more than a ceramic serving tray. When he asked what he would do with the tray that looked “older than her,” Farah suggested he could use it to serve her cashews, pistachios, et al. Before entering Shaan’s household, Farah also requested Dilip not to sing other singers’ songs in front of Shaan.
As soon as they arrived, Farah and Dilip were welcomed by Shaan and his family. When the singer shared that he had invited a crew to do Dilip’s hair and makeup, Farah quipped that he now has no hair, as he had recently shaved his head. “And makeup is of no use on him now. He should go for plastic surgery instead,” she joked. During their conversation, Farah also recalled that she used to buy children’s furniture from Shaan’s wife and interior decorator Radhika’s shop.
As the episode progressed, Farah put Dilip on the spot at one point and asked which of Shaan’s songs were his favourites. After racking his brain for a bit, he ended up mentioning two songs sung by Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam. “Have you heard ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ from Om Shanti Om?” she asked, to which he replied yes and mentioned that he liked that song. When Radhika asked Dilip who made the movie, he immediately said, “Karan Johar,” much to Farah’s embarrassment.
As the cooking session began, Farah quipped that whenever someone mentioned, “cut them into mota (thick) pieces,” Dilip would look at her mockingly. Nonetheless, as the episode progressed, Dilip said, “Whoever gets to work with ma’am (Farah), they are lucky,” impressing Farah, who responded, “I will give you two notes today… handwritten notes.” The video ended with Dilip interacting with Shaan’s cook, joking that he would teach him how to grow big like him. “I’ll teach you the trick,” he said.
