Deepika Padukone told ‘underconfident’ Ranveer Singh to tone down ‘distracting’ fashion style: ‘You come across as confident, but…’

Ranveer Singh said that he was surprised to find that his own Wikipedia article described him as a fashion icon, which was something that he wasn't entirely comfortable with.

Actor Ranveer Singh appeared on the season eight premiere of Koffee with Karan alongside his wife, Deepika Padukone, and spoke about his image as a fashion icon. He said that he was surprised when people started talking about his sartorial choices almost as much as they did about his acting, and this wasn’t something that he was comfortable with. Deepika, in fact, advised him to tone down his formerly colourful style, after making a keen observation about his personality.

Karan Johar told Ranveer that he was having his own fashion struggles, fuelled by a ‘mid-life crisis’ and social media trolling, and recalled when the actor reached out to him for some image advice. Ranveer said that like most things in life, he listens to everybody’s opinion, but ultimately makes his own decisions. “I felt like I wanted to not wear those clothes. I didn’t want people to talk about what I’m wearing. I want you to talk about my films, my acting, I want you to talk about me,” he said.

Revealing Deepika’s advice, he continued, “It was Deepika who pointed this out to me. We were having a chat, and she was like, ‘You know, you come across as this supremely confident person, but you’re actually underconfident’. I was like, ‘Acha?’ She was like, ‘You should stop distracting people from who you are with all these flashy clothes’. That resonated with me.”

Ranveer said that shortly after this chat, he went to meet director Sanjay Leela Bhansali wearing an all-black outfit, and the filmmaker was very impressed. “You’re looking amazing,” the director said. “Because of your monochrome, your face is coming out more. I can see more of you. You ought to keep this going.” Ranveer said that he values Bhansali’s opinion, and revealed that the director was the first person to tell him to keep facial hair.

Ranveer and Deepika have worked on three films together with Bhansali; in fact, they started dating while working on Goliyon Ki Raasleela – Ram Leela. They also starred together in Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani, and Ranveer is rumoured to be reuniting with the filmmaker on Baiju Bawra.
