The Juvenile Justice Board of Pune on Wednesday granted a further extension of 14 days to the observation home remand of the 17-and-a-half-year-old minor accused in the case related to the Porsche crash that killed two young software engineers last month.
He will thus remain at the observation home for juveniles in conflict with law till June 25, when the next hearing on the remand will be held.
The initial remand of the minor started on May 22 and ended on June 5. After the Pune police sought an extension, the remand was extended till June 12.
On Wednesday the police sought a further extension of 14 days, which the defence lawyers opposed. They sought that the minor be released into the custody of his relatives.
However, after hearing both sides, the board extended the remand till June 25.
Following his detention after the accident on May 19, the minor was produced before the board in the afternoon on the same day. The police then sought his custody in the juvenile observation home and also appealed that he be tried as an adult.
The three-member board, which then consisted of just one non-judicial member, rejected the applications and granted bail to the boy on various conditions, including writing an essay, studying traffic safety norms and undergoing de-addiction counselling.
The police challenged the board’s order in the district court, which referred the matter back to the board to be decided again as per the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
On May 22, the three-member board sent the minor to the observation home till June 5 with psychological and de-addiction counselling, among the terms for rehabilitation and reform.
In the early hours of May 19, the juvenile was allegedly driving the Porsche car at very high speed while being intoxicated when the car crashed into a bike, killing Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, the software engineers.
