The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is on alert as heavy showers have continued to lash the city since Sunday night, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording the maximum rainfall of 129.2 mm in Lohegaon.
With the four dams upstream the Mutha River either being filled to capacity or nearing the mark, water is being released from all of them, officials said.
The weather department recorded 89 mm of rainfall in the Kalas area, followed by 87.8 mm in Hadapsar Mundhwa since Sunday night. It also registered 61.1 mm of rainfall in Pashan, and 60 mm in Shivajinagar. The lowest rainfall of 13 mm was reported in Wanawadi.
The PMC has installed rain gauge meters in each of its 15 ward office areas to monitor rainfall. “The city has been witnessing continuous rain since Sunday. The civic body-installed rain monitoring system has registered the maximum rainfall in Kalas (89 mm),” said Prithviraj B P, Additional Municipal Commissioner.
As per the PMC data, Kalas was followed by Hadapsar Mundhwa (87.80 mm), Kondhwa (85.60 mm), Nagar Road (81.60 mm), Warje-Karvenagar (80.80 mm), Dhole Patil Road (74.20 mm), Sinhagad Road (71.40 mm), Khadakwasla (65.20 mm), Kothrud (65.20 mm), Bhavani Peth (58.40 mm), Kasba (56.20 mm), Shivajinagar Ghode Road (51.40 mm), Bibwewadi (49.40 mm), and Andhra Baner (43.60 mm), as recorded till till 8.30 am on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Varun MITRA citizens’ initiative recorded 99 mm of rainfall in Kondhwa Khurd, 90.8 mm in Magarpatta City, 85.6 mm in Pimple Gurav, 88 mm in Nigdi, 88.6 mm in Ghorpadi, 76.2 mm in Nanded City, and 81 mm of rainfall in Bavdhan.
“Three of the four dams – Panshet, Varasgao,n and Temghar – which are on the upstream side of the Mutha River are filled to capacity. The fourth dam, Khadakwasla, is over 98 per cent full, so water is being released from all dams on the Mutha River,” said Shweta Kurhade of the Central Flood Control Room, Water Resources Department.
From the Khadakwasla dam, 14,547 cusecs of water is being released, which will slowly be increased to 20,000 cusecs, she said, adding that the PMC should ensure that citizens do not cross the Blue Line of the Mutha River for their own safety. Domestic animals and vehicles alongside the river should be removed at the earliest, she stated.
