Out of the 186 people attending Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘janta durbar’ (people’s court) in Patna on Monday, six have tested positive for Covid-19.

After the event, Kumar told reporters, “It is a matter of concern that six people have been tested positive…We have been keeping a close watch on the situation. Hospitals are well prepared to deal with the Covid surge.”

Moreover, the cook at the CM’s house has also tested positive for Covid-19.

Also, former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi, his wife and 16 of his family members and staffers have also tested positive. They are in home isolation in Manjhi’s paternal village of Mahkar in Gaya. This is the second time Manjhi has been tested positive for the virus.

Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) spokesperson Danish Rizwan said, “The former CM, his wife Shanti Devi, daughter Pushpa Manjhi, daughter-in-law Deepa Manjhi, the former CM’s personal assistant Ganesh Pandit and 13 others have tested positive.”

Amid a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases, Kumar said that the situation will be reviewed on Tuesday. Winter vacations in schools have already been extended till January 8. However, Kumar would go ahead with his Samaj Sudhar campaign as scheduled in Gaya on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Bihar reported 1,074 fresh cases. In the last few days, the most number of infections have been reported from Patna, including 100 doctors who have tested positive over the last two days.

Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in Patna has reported 96 new cases over the last two days. Most of these doctors who tested positive were on duty in the Covid ward of the hospital.

When asked if polls in five states should be conducted in the middle of a Covid surge, Kumar said, “It is up to the states concerned to take a call on the matter. In the past, Kerala went to polls despite having a high number of cases back. Bihar also had an election (in 2020) when Covid cases were still being reported.”
