Two persons were killed after a sedan, driven by a 17-year-old boy, rammed into their two-wheeler on Wednesday near Girgaon Chowpatty. The DB Marg police, who have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the minor, have also booked his father for letting him drive his vehicle despite not having a licence.
The police said the incident took place at around 5.20 am, when the victims, identified as Akbar Dawood Khan (47) and Kiran Anwar Khan (36), who were on a bike, were taking a right turn at Cafe Ideal restaurant’s junction near Girgaon Chowpatty.
The police said that Akbar was a resident of Nagpada while Kiran lived in Grant Road.
“The two were out since Tuesday night to celebrate Akbar’s birthday. They went for dinner to a restaurant in south Mumbai after which they spent some time at the Marine Drive promenade,” a police officer said.
At around 5.20 am, the victims were going from Marine Drive to Grant Road. Akbar, who was riding the bike, took a right turn at a signal outside Cafe Ideal restaurant, when the speeding sedan rammed into them.
“It is a blind spot for people taking right at the junction as there is a slight turn before the signal for motorists heading towards Nariman Point from Malabar Hill,” the officer added.
The police said that Akbar died on the spot while Kiran was rushed to JJ hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
“A 17-year-old boy, who was driving the sedan, was detained at the spot and taken to the police station for inquiry. He was on a joyride with his friend,” the officer said.
According to the police, the juvenile, a student of Class 11, stays in central Mumbai and is the son of a senior bank executive. “On Wednesday morning, he had taken the keys of the car without informing anyone,” said an officer.
The police said that the juvenile has been booked under relevant sections of rash and negligent driving while his father has also been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
A senior police officer said, “The minor was handed over to his parents and he will be presented before court when we will file a chargesheet in the case.”
“His father was not arrested. We have served him a notice,” the officer said.
