Saif Ali Khan Attack News Live Updates: Actor back home after being discharged from Lilavati hospital

The 30-year-old man arrested for stabbing and injuring actor Saif Ali Khan slept soundly after the attack and changed his clothes before heading to Worli, a police official said on Monday.

The Mumbai police on Sunday arrested the accused, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir, a Bangladeshi national, in neighbouring Thane city.

According to the police, the accused had entered the Bollywood star's home in the Satguru Sharan building in upscale Bandra in the early hours of January 16 with the intention of theft. (PTI)

The Mumbai police on Monday found 19 fingerprints of the Saif Ali Khan's attacker at the crime scene. Fingerprints were collected from the crime scene, the building's duct shaft, the staircase, and the leader used to climb the building, the police said.

Police believe this evidence will play crucial role in securing conviction in the case. This comes a day after a 30-year-old man of Bangladeshi origin was arrested by the cops in connection with the case.

Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raised concerns about the growing security threats posed by migrant labourers in the country after the main accused in the Saif Ali Khan attack case - a migrant from Bangladesh - was arrested by the Mumbai Police.

Speaking on the incident, Mhaske said, "The nationality of the labourers coming here should be checked. They enter India to work, but some end up committing crimes and engaging in terrorism." He added that he would meet with the Police Commissioner the following day to discuss measures for improving security and addressing this issue.

In the Saif Ali Khan attack case, the preliminary investigation suggests that the accused climbed the stairs to the seventh-eighth floor of the building where Khan and his actor wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, live with their children and domestic staff.

“He entered the duct area, climbed to the 12th floor using a pipe and entered the actor's flat through a bathroom window. He then came out from the bathroom, where the actor's staff spotted him, leading to the chain of events that culminated into the knife attack,” an official had said earlier.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said on Monday, "Who is saying he is a Bangladeshi? The BJP? They are claiming that the attack on Saif Ali Khan is an international conspiracy. What is the international conspiracy? An actor has been attacked and the people should be told the truth... If he is a Bangladeshi, then the central government is responsible. It is Amit Shah's responsibility and he should resign... All Bangladeshis should be removed and it should begin with Shiekh Haseena, who has been given asylum. They are only creating fear because of the Mumbai municipal elections... When we wanted to speak against Bangladeshis in the Parliament, the BJP stopped us citing international ties... 10 days ago they accused Saif Ali Khan of Love Jihad and now they are worried about him... His son's name is Taimur. Their people spoke ill about him also. PM Modi gained the information and now Taimur is a symbol of love for them..."

Saif Ali Khan's sister Soha Ali Khan said while addressing the media on Sunday evening, " We are happy that he is recovering well and we are very thankful and we feel very blessed and grateful that it wasn't any worse. Thank you for all your wishes."

Saif is undergoing treatment at the Lilavati Hospital, and went through multiple surgeries after getting stabbed six times during a burglary attempt in his home. The knife blade was lodged less than an inch from his spine, and had the potential to be fatal.

The Mumbai police, after gaining custody of the prime accused in the Saif Ali Khan attack case, is interrogating him to unravel "international conspiracy", if any.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the man was unaware that he had entered a Bollywood star's house and his intention was theft, a senior police official told reporters.

A court remanded the accused, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Fakir (30), in five-day police custody after observing that the police's contention of an international conspiracy cannot be ruled out.

On AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal's statement on the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said, "Ever since Arvind Kejriwal came to know the name of the person who attacked Saif Ali Khan, he has gone silent. Is it because the attacker is from his vote bank, which he wants to retain? Arvind Kejriwal did not say a word about the infiltrator... This is evident from the fact that Amanatullah Khan, who distributed Rs 10,000 to Rohingyas during the Covid-19 period... was given a ticket in Delhi Elections 2025... This shows that Arvind Kejriwal's intention and policy is to save Bangladeshi infiltrators... I openly challenge him to take the name of the infiltrator in a press conference..."

Sources associated with the investigation into Saif Ali Khan attack case told The Indian Express that the alleged attacker was tracked down by the Mumbai police through a crucial lead - a UPI transaction made through Google Pay (G Pay) for paratha and a bottle of water at a stall near Century Mill in Worli.

The accused was arrested by the police nearly 70 hours after the crime took place inside Saif's Bandra home on Thursday. The attacker was caught fleeing the scene through a CCTV camera inside Khan's apartment complex. Read more.

The Mumbai police on Monday are likely to take accused Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad to Saif Ali Khan's Bandra home to recreate the crime scene, reported PTI. This is being done to establish the timeline and gather more evidence for the case.

The 30-year-old accused, who was arrested on Saturday by the Mumbai police, was remanded to five-day police custody by a court in Bandra.

The seriousness of the courtroom in Bandra, where a Bangladeshi man arrested for allegedly attacking actor Saif Ali Khan was presented on Sunday, momentarily dissipated when two lawyers jostled to represent him.

The unusual drama concerning the high-profile case prompted the magistrate before whom the 30-year-old man had been brought for remand proceedings to act as referee and suggest to the lawyers to appear as a team.

The court asked him if he had any complaints against the police to which Shehzad replied in the negative. He was then taken to a box meant for accused persons in the back end of the courtroom.

A lawyer then came forward claiming to be appearing for the accused.

However, the scene turned dramatic just before he could take the signature of the accused on the ‘vakalatamana' (legal document authorising a lawyer to appear in a case).

Another lawyer jostled his way to the accused box and took Shehzad's signature on his vakalatamana, triggering moments of confusion about who would appear for the alleged attacker.

To defuse the situation, the magistrate suggested to both the competing lawyers to represent Shehzad. “You both can appear,” the magistrate said, bringing back the focus on the remand proceedings. The duo agreed.

When asked about actor Saif Ali Khan's attacker being a Bangladeshi, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar said, "That's why I urge PM Modi that we need to act against the infiltrators, and we need to induct people into the Army and BSF permanently. This (Agniveer) scheme under which soldiers will have to retire after three years will not work for long. That's why I urge everyone to think about it and should avoid doing politics over this."

A holiday court in Mumbai on Sunday sent Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, a 30-year-old man of Bangladeshi origin, to police custody for five days after he was arrested for allegedly stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan.

Although investigators sought 14 days of custody of the accused, the court granted the police custody of five days only. While seeking his custody, the investigators submitted 15 grounds before the court, as follows:

Investigation into motive and instigation: The accused committed a serious crime by breaking into the residence of the famous actor Saif Ali Khan, intending to rob him, and attacking him with a sharp object in front of family members and other house staff. Custodial interrogation is necessary to determine if anyone instigated him to commit this crime.

The man arrested on Sunday in the January 16 Saif Ali Khan attack case was in Bandra till 7am on the day of the incident and slept at a bus stop, a police official said.

“Vijay Das was normal in behaviour. I never imagined he could do such a heinous crime and attack Saif Ali Khan,” said Rohmat Khan, 25, a friend and former colleague of the man arrested on Sunday for the attack on the Bollywood actor.

“He got the job through a contractor and worked with the Thane branch of Hotel Blabber All Day in the housekeeping section, while I was in the cafeteria section. He always looked like a kind-hearted man. He never had any argument or fight with anyone. He was good at his work,” said Khan.

BJP senior leader Kirit Somaiya on Sunday claimed Bangladeshi nationals without valid documents are living at a labour camp in Thane from where alleged attacker of actor Saif Ali Khan was arrested.

The former MP requested the Thane police commissioner to conduct a combing operation at the Kavesar labour camp.

"I met 12 labourers, and of that 9 were Bangladeshi Muslim. They say they are from Malda, West Bengal, but No Authentic Documents (sic)," he tweeted.

Vijay Das was normal in behaviour, never imagined he could do such heinous crime and attack Saif Ali Khan, says Rohmat Khan, 25, the friend and former co-worker of Shariful Islam alias Vijay Das, while speaking to The Indian Express. Amid allegations of a "collapse" in law and order, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday dismissed claims made by the opposition following the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan.

He clarified that the accused had migrated from Bangladesh and was unaware that it was the residence of a film star.

Pawar, who also serves as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief, explained that the suspect had entered Saif Ali Khan's residence with the intent to commit robbery.

"Some opposition leaders have stated that law and order has collapsed in Mumbai after the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan. However, the reality is that the accused, who had migrated from Bangladesh, first went to Kolkata before coming to Mumbai after hearing much about the city. He is a thief who entered Saif Ali Khan's house through the duct and was unaware that it belonged to a film star. His intention was simply to rob," Pawar said.

A Mumbai court on Sunday remanded a man arrested in the Saif Ali Khan attack case in police custody till January 24 after observing that the police's contention of an international conspiracy cannot be ruled out.

Police told court that the alleged attacker was a Bangladeshi national and there was need to find the motive behind his act. Police also told court they needed to find out if there was an international conspiracy linked to the case.

Accepting the police's contention after perusing documents on record, the court said the prosecution's submission of international conspiracy "cannot be said to be impossible".

After being caught from Thane on Saturday night, the man suspected of having stabbed actor Saif Ali Khan at his residence allegedly admitted to the crime, saying, “Ha maine hi kiya (Yes, I did it).” A police officer among the approximately 100 police personnel searching for the accused in Thane confirmed this to The Indian Express.

The Mumbai police later on Sunday morning said primary evidence revealed that the attacker is a Bangladeshi national who does not have any valid Indian identity proof. The defence lawyer of Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, the Bangladeshi man arrested by Mumbai Police for stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, said that the arrest was illegal as the police never served a prior notice to him.

The lawyer also argued that his client has been residing in Mumbai for several years and has documents to support the same. He further stated that his client is not a habitual offender and that he has a young boy. He further added that his client was just being made a scapegoat by the police just because the case was related to a Bollywood actor.

The investigating officer of the Saif Ali Khan attack case told Bandra court that the police would need to explore why Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad, who is a Bangladeshi national, entered India illegally. Shahzad was arrested by Mumbai Police late on Saturday for attacking Saif Ali Khan at his residence in Bandra (West).

Using mobile records, the police tracked Shahzad’s last-known location, eventually narrowing their search to a labour camp where he had stayed. With the help of his former employer, a contractor named Pandey, the police were able to locate the exact spot where Shahzad was hiding.

Mumbai Police officials have stated that Shahzad did not have any prior criminal record before this incident.

The Mumbai Police, led by Deputy Commissioner Navnath Dhawale, launched an intensive manhunt involving nearly 20 police teams in pursuit of the suspect.

During his interrogation, Shahzad revealed that after fleeing to Thane, he had tried to keep a low profile, moving from one temporary hideout to another.

The Mumbai Police revealed that the accused who stabbed Saif Ali Khan at his residence had slept inside dense mangroves in Thane bear reliance labour camp in Kasarwadavli. After the crime, he had taken a train from Bandra to Dadar from where he walked to his Worli Koliwada residence. After seeing his image flash on TV, he got scared and fled to Thane.
