Connectivity to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to improve significantly with the upcoming Metro projects, including Line 7A (Gundavali Metro station to CSMI airport) and underground Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ).
Earlier this month, tunneling work began on the 3.4-kilomtre Mumbai Metro Line 7A — an extension of red line or Metro 7 that connects Dahisar east to Gundavali, which will connect Andheri East to the airport.
The underground Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ) will also offer convenient access for commuters from Colaba to reach the airport station, named CSMIA T2.
Both the upcoming Metro lines will take passengers directly to the airport terminal area, eliminating the need of autos or cabs, unlike the existing airport station on Metro Line One (Ghatkopar to Versova via Andheri).
In addition to direct connectivity, the upcoming Metro Line 1, Line 6, 2A, and 2B will also have interchange stations, further enhancing the travel within the city and suburbs.
According to an official of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Metro Line 7A is scheduled to be operational by December 2025.
The tunneling work for this line has already begun, with a partial elevated alignment running parallel to the Western Express Highway and Sahar elevated road. MMRDA is the project implementing authority for Metro Line 7A.
The Metro Line 3 CSMIA T2 station is 91 per cent complete and is part of Phase 1 (Aarey to BKC) alignment of underground Metro Line 3, while Phase 1 (Aarey to BKC) of Metro Line 3 expected to be ready by December this year or early next year.
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) is the project implementing authority of underground Metro Line 3.
MMRDA commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee IAS said the completion of Metro Line 7A will play a crucial role in connecting the international airport to the MMR region. “This Metro line will serve as a reliable link, seamlessly connecting the western and eastern suburbs of Mumbai, along with South Mumbai, Mira Bhayander and Thane, through a comprehensive network of Metro lines, including 7, 2A, 2B, 9, as well as underground Line 3, Line 4, and Metro 10. The convenience of this connectivity will provide commuters traveling to the airport with a hassle-free journey, offering convenient access to the T2 terminal,” said Dr Mukherjee
According to a spokesperson of the MMRC, “Metro Line 3 is expected to be the busiest single line in Mumbai, connecting multiple major hotspots from Colaba to SEEPZ. Airport stations of MML-3 are the most crucial stations of this corridor as it will connect T1 & T2.”
