The Nationalist Congress Party (SP) on Sunday elected MLA Jitendra Awhad as its legislative Assembly leader and first-time MLA Rohit Patil, son of late RR Patil, as the chief whip of the party. Senior MLA Uttam Jankar was elected as another whip of the party.
The decision was made at a meeting of party legislators held by NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar. Announcing the decision, party’s state president Jayant Patil said, “Along with Rohit, senior MLA Uttam Jankar has been elected as whip of the party and Awhad as a group leader of the legislative party.”
Patil added that one of the party’s 10 MLAs, Sandip Kshirsagar, was absent in the meeting due to a pre-planned function.
“Even though our number is small, our members will perform well under the leadership of Jitendra Awhad. The NCP will boldly raise the issues of the people of Maharashtra in the legislature,” Patil said.
At the meeting, it was also decided to demand election through ballot paper instead of EVMs. Party members also raised concerns about the increase in the voting by percentage point after 5pm on the day of assembly elections.
“Everyone have expressed concern about how there was an increase in voting by 8 per cent after 5 pm. It is very serious that the vote count in Form 17 and the vote count released do not match. It should be investigated. The Election Commission closed its website after two days. It ensured that the information would not be available to the people,” Patil said.
