A day after the Supreme Court came down heavily on Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar over the delayed adjudication of the disqualification petitions filed by the two factions of Shiv Sena MLAs against each other, Narwekar on Wednesday morning met Chief Minister Eknath Shinde who is leading his faction of Shiv Sena.

The meeting raised eyebrows of many in the political circles and sparked speculations that the meeting had taken place to discuss about the SC remarks and the issue of disqualification.

Narwekar, however, said the meeting was not political in nature and he met him to discuss the issues and development and infrastructure works in his constituency.

The SC had raised questions over the timeline set by him for the adjudication of the Shiv Sena MLAs disqualification case which doesn’t mention the final verdict date and expressed displeasure that he was giving interviews saying that he was a co-equal branch of the government.

Narwekar is an MLA from Colaba Assembly constituency in Mumbai. An official said, “The Speaker met CM to discuss the ongoing infrastructure projects and other issues in his Assembly constituency. There is also an issue of constructing a sea protection wall along the coast in Colaba. Politics was not on the agenda of the meeting.”

Meanwhile, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday slammed Narwekar over the issues of delay in giving the decision on the disqualification petition.

Through the editorial in party’s mouthpiece Saamana, the Sena UBT said, “Narwekar had no idea about how the tribunal works. He is protecting the dishonest government and is acting in a jihadist manner. He is running his own personal law, similar to the personal law which Modi-Shah are using to run the country. He says he is following Constitution. Looking at how he has treated and acted in this disqualification process, it looks like he doesn’t seem to have anything with the Constitution. Disobeying the SC is not just arbitrary but a sign of lack of integrity. He is holding a Constitutional post which is sovereign but he is not behaving that way. Why is he going to Delhi frequently and meeting BJP leaders?,” the editorial stated.
