A 36-year-old man returning from a relative’s funeral was killed and his nephew was injured in a hit-and-run accident in Goregaon (East) in Mumbai early Thursday.

According to the Mumbai police, Ramesh Jhore and his nephew Naresh, 18, were returning home on Jhore’s scooter from Kandivali. When they reached the Dindoshi flyover on Western Express Highway, a speeding four-wheeler rammed into their vehicle from behind. As they fell off the scooter, the speeding vehicle fled the scene.

Naresh lost consciousness and Jhore suffered serious injuries, and were rushed to a hospital. A police officer said Naresh was informed at the hospital that his uncle had died.

After Naresh told the officers about the accident, the Dindoshi police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Motors Vehicle Act for causing death by negligence and not providing medical assistance to the injured.

The police said they are checking for CCTV cameras in the area to identify the vehicle that caused the accident and look for its driver.
