To provide direct access to Mumbai Coastal road and as a proactive measure against traffic bottlenecks in the future, Mumbai is set to get a new vehicular underpass running below the Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, connecting JK Kapur Chowk with the coastal road via the vehicular interchange at the Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk at Worli Seaface.
Once the underpass is opened vehicles can travel into two directions, one will be towards the Bandra and the other will be towards Marine Drive/Nariman Point, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic.
Traffic coming from Atal Setu will merge into the proposed Worli-Sewri connector which will drop a few meters away from the JK Kapur Chowk, providing direct access for southbound vehicles.
The underpass will be 550 meters long and 11 meters wide. Civic officials said that this tunnel will cater to only southbound vehicles coming from the Dadar, and Prabhadevi areas. The underpass is made using cut-and-cover methodology and will have concrete roads alongside safety measures like CCTV cameras and firefighting systems.
Civic officials maintained that work on the tunnel is in the final stages and it will be completed by March 20. Earlier this month, the roof slab of this tunnel was installed. The cost of this tunnel is being covered under the Rs 13,893-crore budget of the coastal road.
“This tunnel will cater to only southbound traffic and one of the key advantages of this underpass is going to be that vehicles coming from Sewri-Worli connector can easily take the underpass which will give them direct access to western suburbs or southern tip of Mumbai through the coastal road and will eventually cut down travel time significantly,” said an official from the BMC.
