2 brothers killed and 3 others injured after car catches fire in Mumbai’s Sion

The accident took place at around 4 am on B A Road in the Matunga area when the Mankhurd residents were going to Marine Drive after a party in their CNG vehicle.

Two brothers were killed and three of their friends sustained burn injuries after their CNG-powered four-wheeler hit a divider on the road and burst into flames in Mumbai’s Sion area while they were headed for a joyride early Monday.

The local Sion police filed an accidental death report and said they would register an FIR against the vehicle’s driver who they suspect was under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place.

Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Chavan said, “The five had consumed alcohol at a party. We are trying to find out where the party was. After the party, they were headed to Marine Drive for a joyride when the incident took place. We will be registering an FIR against the driver since was driving under the influence of alcohol”.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Prem Waghela, 18, and Ajay Waghela, 20. Harsh Kadam, 20, suffered 60 to 70 per cent burn injuries, and Hitesh Bhoir, 25, and driver Kunal Attar, 25 also received major burn injuries, a fire official said.

According to Chavan, Kadam, who sustained severe burn injuries, is still in serious condition and Bhoir and Attar are out of danger. The officer added they would place Attar under arrest after he was better.

An officer from Sion police station said that the incident took place around 4.24 am, on B A Road in the Matunga area.

After their car caught fire, the locks on the left doors of the car got jammed and the five men could not get out of the vehicle, an officer said. Some residents alerted the fire and police personnel who rushed to the spot.

Firefighters doused the flames and rushed the injured to the Sion Hospital, he said.

Another officer from Sion police station said four of the five car occupants were residents of Mankhurd. The officer added Attar lives in Nerul and came to know the four others as his wife is from Mankhurd.
