A day after ruling out any changes in Maharashtra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership has directed Deputy Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to expedite the process of road-mapping seat division for the upcoming Assembly elections with the party’s alliance partners — Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP led by deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

After its debacle in Lok Sabha polls in the state, the BJP is confronting the next challenge in Assembly polls for 288 seats scheduled in October 2024. The party’s immediate concern is to first set its own house in order and mend fences with alliance partners Shiv Sena and NCP.

The party’s core committee meeting held in Delhi on Tuesday, presided over by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reviewed reasons for the LS failure in state and reflected on future plans keeping Assembly polls in sight.

A highly placed source who was present at the meeting said, “The Union Home Minister stressed the need for team work with greater coordination in the organisation. While urging Fadnavis to continue, he appreciated his hard work and made it clear that there was no need for him to resign.”

“The Lok Sabha elections was not his individual responsibility. It is a collective responsibility,” Amit Shah said, as per the source.

After the Lok Sabha debacle, Fadnavis offered to resign from the government, taking up the responsibility of the LS debacle with BJP winning just nine out of 28 seats. The Deputy CM cited that he wanted to devote entire time to organisational work.

At the meeting it was pointed out that Fadnavis had managed the coalition government of three parties. The central leadership asked Fadnavis to plan for the coming state Assembly polls after adequately consulting other leaders by June 22, the source said.

The state BJP will convene another core committee meeting in Mumbai on June 22 that will be attended by newly appointed Maharashtra poll incharge Union minister Bhupender Yadav along with co-incharge Ashwini Vaishnaw. The party will also hold discussions with CM Eknath Shinde and NCP Deputy CM Ajit Pawar to expedite their seat-sharing discussions.

According to insiders, the central leadership conveyed the message that “all the leaders in the party should be proactive. It should not be like Fadnavis alone is working. Maharashtra is not his responsibility alone. It should be a team work where everybody has to contribute”.
