At 203 mm, Mumbai witnesses season’s heaviest 24-hour rainfall spell

The IMD had issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai till Saturday, indicating heavy to very heavy rains. The alert may be extended later today if heavy rains continue to lash the city.

Mumbai recorded this season’s heaviest rainfall spell in a span of 24 hours on Saturday morning with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showing that the figure crossed the 200-mm mark during the period between 8.30 am on Friday and 8.20 am on Saturday.

According to the IMD’s official figures, 203.7 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Santacruz observatory, while the coastal observatory in Colaba recorded 103 mm.

So far, the highest single-day rainfall this season was recorded on June 25 at 176.1 mm, followed by 121.6 mm on June 29. The second-highest rainfall recorded this month was on July 18 at 119.9 mm.

Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai, said, “Till the end of this weekend, moderate to heavy spells of rain are expected to lash Mumbai as a low-pressure exists, coupled with a cyclonic circulation that has developed over south Chhattisgarh which will intensify the condition for rains in Mumbai and adjoining districts.”

Mumbai has also surpassed the 1,000-mm rainfall mark in July in just three weeks as the total rain recorded in the city between July 1 and July 22 now stands at 1,141.8 mm.

Over the last 24 hours, all the primary pockets of Mumbai recorded rainfall in three figures, with Andheri East (Marol) recording 215 mm, followed by 200 mm in Vikhroli, 186 mm in Vidyavihar, 180 mm in Juhu, 172 mm in Chembur, 169 mm in Ghatkopar, 165 mm in Vile Parle, 150 mm in Kurla, 146 mm in Bhandup, 127 mm in Ram Mandir, 110 mm in Mulund, 106 mm in CSMT and 103 mm in Colaba.

IMD officials have maintained that intense spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue to lash Mumbai throughout the day.

In its five-day forecast issued on Friday (July 21), the IMD had issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai till Saturday, indicating heavy to very heavy rains. The alert may be extended later today if heavy rains continue to lash Mumbai.

Meanwhile the city’s water stock on Saturday morning stood at 47.54 per cent which saw a 5 per cent increase in the past 24 hours. The civic body’s data showed that the catchment areas of several lakes received rainfall above 100 mm in the past 24 hours, which included 163 mm in Tulsi Lake, 146 mm in Vehar Lake, 134 mm in Modak Sagar, 101 mm in Tansa Lake, 93 mm in Bhatsa Lake, 60 mm in Upper Vaitarna and 39 mm in Middle Vaitarna.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather system (AWS) also showed 82.89 mm of average rainfall in the island city, 148.4 mm in the eastern suburbs and 122.3 mm in the western suburbs.
