While the police maintain they will take action only after a proper investigation of the Friday episode at the Model Town market involving the president of the shopkeepers association and a postman, its not the first time that the traders leader has hit the headlines for such a reason.
Amarjeet Singh, the president of the shopkeepers association who enjoys close relationship with many Akali leaders like Harish Rai Dhanda,Maheshinder Singh Grewal,Manpreet Singh Ayali and Simerjeet Singh Bains, had raised a huge hue and cry over small makeshift rehris set up by some migrant labourers in Sarabha Nagar market last year. These rehris that sold items like boiled eggs and vegetables were forcibly removed by him citing security of the area residents.
While Amarjeet Singh, who is also an advocate, claimed that Pavittar Singh, the postman, was drunk on duty and misbehaved with him,the latter, who was beaten up by the former, said his turban was removed by Amarjeet Singh, hurting his religious feelings. The two have lodged their complaints to the police.
However,DCP Gurpreet Singh Toor said any kind of action would be taken only after a proper investigation of the incident and anyone found guilty of taking law into his hands would be dealt with strongly. Commissioner Ishwar Singh has asked ADCP-2 Bhupinder Singh to conduct an inquiry into the whole issue, he added.
The public which had to bear the brunt of the incident wants protesters not to cause unnecessary inconvenience to others. It is the right of every person to protest, for we live in a democracy but causing so much inconvenience to the general public is wrong, said Gurpreet Singh,a resident of Model Gram. Two persons were involved in a fight. How can someone get an entire market closed and get all this drama enacted out on the road?
