Bundh erosion: Dept seeks Rs 25 lakh more

Drainage department is still repairing the bundh at Kherabet but excessive water levels in the Sutlej have ensured that the department has met with little success.

The Drainage department is still repairing the bundh at Kherabet but excessive water levels in the Sutlej have ensured that the department has met with little success. As per reports, the department on Tuesday sought an additional Rs 25 lakh to repair the 100 feet long damage after earlier seeking Rs 25 lakh. Thus Rs 50 lakh will be required to repair the cave-in at Kherabet.

Throughout this monsoon, however, the district administration has spent Rs 2.29 crore for emergency relief work alone for various sites at the Dhussi. To add to the expenditure,Rs 3 crore was spent on permanent repairs as well. Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari said: “ I cannot comment on the quality of work being done at various sites, administration comes in picture once emergency works have to be done and for that we have released Rs 2.29 crore so far and more is expected. Money was spent at Madhepur,Kherabet,Mattewara,Issewal and many other sites where erosion occurred during the monsoons”.

The villagers, however, have questioned the effectiveness of the work after suffering from repeated cave-ins. Inderjit Singh, sarpanch of Kherabet village said: “ Temporary work was started very late in this area and now even that has been washed away. More men should have been hired at the start to complete the work”. Tiwari, however, said: “ In Kherabet about 3 km stretch needs to be strengthened with stone work and for that a project worth Rs 100 crore is needed which is not possible at the moment,so we are doing work depending on the availability of funds every year”.
