The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh, in a joint operation with Moradabad police, arrested an alleged Hizbul Mujahideen operative who had been on the run for nearly 17 years and carried a reward on his head.

The police said the accused Ulfat Hussain alias Mohammad Saiful Islam alias Hussain Malik alias Parvez, is a resident of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. The Moradabad police had announced a Rs 25,000 reward for his arrest after a local court issued a warrant against him for jumping bail.

Investigators traced Ulfat Hussain to his residence in Jammu and Kashmir and arrested him in a joint operation on Friday. He is being brought to Moradabad. “We will examine all aspects of the case and investigate his activities while he was on the run,” said Satpal, Senior Superintendent of Police, Moradabad.

According to the police, on July 9, 2001, Ulfat Hussain and three others were arrested and the authorities allegedly seized one AK-47 rifle, one AK-56 rifle, two 30-bore pistols, 12 hand grenades, 39 timers, 50 detonators, 37 batteries, 29 kg of explosives, 560 live cartridges, and eight magazines from them. A case was subsequently registered at Katghar police station in Moradabad.

After being released on bail in 2008, Hussain failed to appear in court, prompting it to issue a warrant against him.

The police further stated that between 1999 and 2000, he underwent training in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). Upon completing his training, he returned to Moradabad, allegedly planning a major attack.
