Is DVC also responsible for waterlogging in Kolkata, BJP asks Mamata

BJP claimed that the proposed all-party meet to discuss the flood situation will be of no use and rather, an inspection team — comprising leaders from all parties — should be sent to the flood-affected districts.

West  Bengal BJP president Rahul Sinha on Wednesday slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s theory that the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was responsible for the flood situation in the state.

Addressing mediapersons, he said: “Why did whole of Kolkata get submerged today in only an hour of rain? Is the DVC responsible for this as well?”

He claimed that the proposed all-party meet at Nabanna to discuss the flood situation will be of no use and rather, an inspection team — comprising leaders from all parties — should be sent to the flood-affected districts.

“We dont support the all-party meet but if any such thing is held, our representatives will go, to avoid sending out any wrong message,” Sinha said.

Claiming that the meeting will be an eyewash, he added: “The CM will be the only one to speak and others will listen. The meeting will be a tool to demand money from the Centre.”

Sinha suggested that to avoid any corruption in the distribution relief to the flood-affected, the financial help should be credited to the bank accounts created under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

Claiming that Mamata was being arrogant in spite of a calamity at hand, BJP national secretary and co-observer for the state, Siddharth Nath Singh, said: “A few days ago, she had said that her government will not beg for money. This was a very unfortunate comment during crisis when lakhs of families were affected due to floods in Bengal.”

He added that Mamata should have acknowledged that the Centre, via State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for 2015-16, had allocated Rs 516 crore. “Out of this, the Centre’s share was 75 per cent and state’s 25 per cent. The Centre has already released Rs 193.50 crore as the first instalment and the second will be made available soon,” said Singh.
