Questioning the initiative to upgrade Presidency University with the formation of the Presidency mentor group,Governor M K Naryanan today said that the same initiative should be taken up for Calcutta University (CU).

While delivering his speech at the convocation ceremony at CU,Narayanan said,“Why only Presidency University? I do not realise what this gentleman in the Presidency mentor group is doing. What I will be saying may not be music to the ears of chairman of Presidency mentor group,Sugata Bose.”

He added,“Given its achievements, there is no reason why CU should not be treated at the same footing with Presidency University in all matters.”

The Governor said,“The Presidency University mentor group has recommended that Presidency University be regarded ‘in the future’ as the crown jewel of institutions of higher education in Bengal…. As the V-C has said,I being Chancellor of the University for the past two and half years,in every respect CU is ‘already the crown jewel’ of institutions of higher education today. It,therefore, should be given the same status.”

Late in the evening,Sugato Bose, chairman of the mentor group, said that he does not think that over-emphasis being given to Presidency University. Presidency is a unitary university while Calcutta University is a big university with several colleges affiliated to it,he said.
