A team from the Vigilance Bureau (VB) in Punjab Tuesday conducted a surprise check at the Jang-e-Azadi Memorial in Kartarpur, Jalandhar district, sources said. It is learnt that the Vigilance had started a probe into the allegation of alleged misuse of funds in the Jang-e-Azadi project, which was set up around seven years ago at a cost of over Rs 300 crore during the SAD-BJP rule from 2012-17.

A team led by the district superintendent of police visited the memorial built to commemorate the contribution of the Punjabi community to the Indian Independence movement and collected a few materials used for the construction of sculptures and other items, they said. The sleuths also checked the furniture that had the logo of the company that manufactured the items.

It is learnt that a Ludhiana-based contractor who was given the construction work has also been summoned by the Vigilance. According to the Vigilance sources, the team also examined the installation of air-conditioners and other materials.

The memorial has several galleries featuring incidents of the Indian freedom struggle. It is learnt that senior officials who were involved in the project were also summoned by the Vigilance.
