On their way back home from school, two girls, aged 7 and 8, were run over by a train at the Nangloi railway station in Northeast Delhi on Friday afternoon, police said.
“At about 1 pm, a train struck the two children near Nangloi railway station at Sukhi Nahar, on the Bahadurgarh side”, an officer said.
Police said the incident happened when Sahista Parveen (8) and Raunak Khatun (7) were heading from school towards their home in Prem Nagar.
“When they were trying to cross the tracks, one intercity express hit them. The operator was unable to halt the train in time and the students died on the spot,” the officer said.
After the incident, the parents of the girls, along with local residents, staged a protest at the railway track.
“Following the accident, around 500-700 people assembled at the site and blocked the railway track, resulting in disruption of rail traffic,” a senior officer said.
“Local police and Government Railway Police staff reached the spot, controlled the crowd, and restored train movement,” said DCP (Railways) KPS Malhotra.
