A roadside argument last week escalated and resulted in the murder of two men who were sleeping on footpaths in North Delhi’s Model Town, police said on Monday. Days after the two bodies were found on the opposite side of a road, a suspect was detained on Sunday.
The suspect has been identified as Vijay and is being questioned, said officers.
Police said a PCR call was received in the early hours of April 8 about a man found lying on a footpath near Kripal Bagh Ashram on Bhama Shah Marg. “An unidentified person was admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital and was declared dead. During the investigation, the deceased, found near the Yoga Ashram, was identified as Satish,” DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh said.
Meanwhile, another call was received about a person found lying injured near the Parade Ground. “The information about another person lying near Parade Ground with injury on head and blood spilling from ears was received. He was also declared ‘brought dead’ by the BJRM Hospital,” DCP Singh said.
The police said that the incident occurred around 2 am on April 8, when Vijay aka Babu, 22, allegedly kicked a 17-year-old boy, who was sleeping on a footpath. “The boy said that Vijay asked him for a matchstick, which he didn’t have. He then moved towards a group of 3-4 men who were also sleeping on the footpath. An argument subsequently broke out between them, during which Vijay allegedly hit Satish with a tile,” a police officer said.
Vijay then allegedly hit another man from the group after the others fled. His body was found on the footpath on the opposite of the road, police said. “During questioning, Vijay said he was not asking for a matchbox but his bag, which he had lost,” an officer said.
