Delhi Fire Services (DFS) remained on high alert early on Saturday following two separate fire incidents reported just hours apart, including a major blaze at a factory in Bawana that caused the building to collapse. While no one was reportedly hurt in the fire at the factory, three people sustained burns in the other incident reported in the Old Delhi area.
Officials said the fire at the factory in Sector 2, DSIIDC Bawana, broke out at around 4.48 am. Seventeen fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the site. The situation escalated when a blast occurred subsequently inside the factory premises, causing the building to collapse. The firefighting teams continued cooling operations at the site for several hours.
The other fire incident was reported at around 3.40 am in the Farsh Khana area near Lahori Gate on Shradhanand Marg in Old Delhi. Five fire tenders soon responded to the residential call.
By 4.50 am, the units returned after containing the fire, which was traced to 15 electric meter boards on the ground floor and a nearby motorcycle, said DFS officials. The incident resulted in burn injuries to three individuals who were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital by the police and fire services.
The injured include a 13-year-old boy with 50 per cent burn injuries; Nabi Ahmed, 18, with 45 per cent burns; and Shahnavaz, 30, with 40 per cent burns. All three are currently under observation, said fire officials.
Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been sparked by an electrical short circuit, but an official investigation is underway.
The Delhi Fire Department has urged citizens to remain cautious, especially during the summer months, when the risk of electrical fires and overheating-related incidents increases significantly.
Last week, more than 3,000 books were burnt after a massive fire broke out in the library of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce in North Delhi’s Pitampura, forcing the cancellation of some examinations. No injuries were reported in the incident.
