At least eight persons were injured in a massive explosion that took place at Indian Oil Corporation’s refinery on the Agra-Delhi National Highway in Mathura district on Tuesday evening, police said. No deaths have been reported so far.
The explosion took place around 8.30 pm while the main plant was being restarted after 40 days of being shut, refinery Public Relation Officer Renu Pathak said. “The incident occurred while restarting the atmospheric vacuum unit (AVU), leading to a sudden fire… The blast reportedly happened due to the furnace exploding,” she added.

Refinery police station Inspector Sonu Kumar said the explosion was heard between 8.30 pm and 9.00 pm, injuring several workers near the main plant, he said. “The refinery initially attempted to control the fire internally. Once they managed to contain the blaze, they informed the local authorities,” Kumar added.
The refinery began treating the injured at the site, but four critically injured were admitted to the ICU of City Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, he further said. “The condition of all affected workers is reported as stable,” he said.
