Karnataka HC expresses dismay over hijab imbroglio, says ‘hidden hands’ theory may be true

The manner in which the hijab row at the government pre university (PU) colleges unfolded since December 2021 gives scope to the theory that “unseen hands” precipitated the situation, the Karnataka High Court said Tuesday in its order, while rejecting claims that the hijab is an essential religious practice in Islam.

The High Court has in its order also directed speedy and effective investigation into the provocations for the protests on the basis of a confidential report that was given to the court by the state police through the state advocate general Prabhuling Navadagi.

“We are dismayed as to how all of a sudden that too in the middle of the academic term the issue of hijab is generated and blown out of proportion by the powers that be. The way, hijab imbroglio unfolded gives scope for the argument that some ‘unseen hands’ are at work to engineer social unrest and disharmony,” the High Court stated in its order. Read more

Bengaluru: Green Tribunal directs authorities to submit report on action against Yele Mallappa Shetty Lake

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the minor irrigation department to file independent reports on the actions taken against encroachment and pollution of the Yele Mallappa Shetty lake in eastern Bengaluru on or before March 31.

The tribunal has also directed the minor irrigation department to submit a report regarding the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) within the water body. “We had directed them to ascertain any possibility of relocating the STP from the boundary of the water body. But quite unfortunately, they have not filed any independent report in this regard,” the NGT said.

While the BBMP has stated that they have removed the construction and demolition (C&D) waste from the waterbody and deployed marshals to protect the lake, the petitioner Jagan Kumar has refuted the claims and told The Indian Express: “There are encroachments in the lake by the government and private bodies. Buildings have come up and there has been no action taken yet. There is a direct discharge of waste in the lake and construction of an STP is also taking place within the water body itself. Moreover, the dumping of C&D waste has been rampant.” (Read More)

Former Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa and his younger son B Y Vijayendra have decided to play supporting roles in the plans of the BJP leadership to bring the party to power in Karnataka in next year’s Assembly polls on account of the BJP leadership emerging significantly stronger after big wins in four states, including Uttar Pradesh.

On Sunday, Vijayendra, who was in Delhi on the eve of the poll results, told reporters in Hubbali that he is not interested in becoming a minister in the current BJP government in Karnataka. This is in contradiction to reports that Vijayendra, a vice-president of the state BJP, was in Delhi last week to lobby with the top party leadership for a position in Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s Cabinet.
