The India Country Director of the World Bank Sunday said the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in his experience has shown “mixed results” in terms of education, but had a major positive impact on poverty levels and nutrition.
Junaid Kamal Ahmad, India Country Director of World Bank, was speaking at the 9th School Choice National Conference organised by the Centre for Civil Society at the India Habitat Centre on Sunday. Ahmad spoke about DBT experiments in Madagascar and Bangladesh among other places. “If used well, DBT can have a major impact on poverty levels, access and nutrition. But whether it has any impact on outcomes of learning — mixed results so far.”
Citing the impact of conditional grant in improving enrollment of girls in secondary education in his home country Bangladesh, Ahmad also stressed on importance of decentralisation of schools.
