Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the eldest grandson of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has come under the spotlight as Bangladesh faces severe political unrest.
Amidst the turmoil, Joy urged the nation’s security forces to uphold the constitution and prevent any unelected government from taking power.
In a Facebook post, he stated, “Your duty is to keep our people safe and our country safe and to uphold the constitution. It means don’t allow any unelected government to come in power for one minute, it is your duty.”
Joy was born on July 27, 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, to nuclear scientist Dr. MA Wazed Miah and Sheikh Hasina.
His birth during the war earned him the nickname “Joy,” meaning “Victory” in Bengali.
His educational background includes studies at St. Joseph’s College in India, the University of Bangalore, and a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington.
He also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University.
In 2002, Joy married Kristine Wazed, and they have a daughter, Sophia Rehana Wazed.
He has played a crucial role as the ICT Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, spearheading the “Digital Bangladesh” initiative.
His efforts have led to significant advancements in mobile phone and internet usage, digital public services, mobile banking, and ICT exports.
In 2007, the World Economic Forum recognized Joy as a Young Global Leader, acknowledging his contributions to the ICT sector.
The current unrest in Bangladesh has seen nearly 300 fatalities as protesters demanded former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
The protests have intensified, leading to Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country for her safety.
Speaking to the BBC’s Newshour, Joy defended his mother’s tenure, highlighting her role in transforming Bangladesh from a failing state to a rising economic power.
