Bengaluru Metro witnessed an unprecedented surge in its ridership between 11 pm on December 31, 2023, and 11 pm on January 1, 2024, with a staggering 6.26 lakh passengers availing the services.
As news of the massive footfall came to the fore, a video showing the packed conditions inside the Metro trains went viral, leaving netizens concerned and outraged.
The video shared by @ChristinMP_ on X, formerly Twitter, had some netizens criticising the apparent lack of crowd control, emphasising the importance of maintaining social distancing norms to curb the potential spread of infectious diseases and any other imminent dangers.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMCRL) had announced that tickets would be available at a reduced rate of Rs 50 and the operating hours would be extended to 2 am from the existing 11 pm.
The BMRCL also encouraged commuters availing the services from Whitefield to opt for Trinity Metro and those coming from Nagasandra or Silk Institute to consider Cubbon Park.

While many commuters were eager to celebrate the arrival of the new year with friends and family, the overwhelming number of passengers in the Metro trains raised questions about the system’s capacity and the need for additional measures during peak hours.
One of them wrote, “Gives me anxiety just to look at it. I’m pretty much confirmed people don’t really know how to enjoy peace.” Another said, “I’ve never seen such crowd even in Mumbai.”
A third netizen replied, “Scary – easily a stampede situation, many lives could be lost.”
