The Southeastern United States suffered widespread destruction as Hurricane Helene made its landfall in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Despite the heavy floods and strong winds, a man trekked some 27 kilometres to walk his daughter down the aisle, and is now making headlines for the gesture.

David Jones, 64, travelled from his home in Boiling Springs in South Carolina to Johnson City in Tennessee for his daughter Elizabeth’s wedding ceremony. According to Today.com, the US broadcast channel, Jones left at 7.30 PM last week on Friday and trekked for 12 hours to reach the venue.

He had to divert several times on Interstate 26 due to heavy flooding triggered by Hurricane Helene, but after about seven hours of driving, he reached the Tennessee border. Further, a police officer stopped him as Jones already reached the end of the road and minor roads were blocked. “You have to understand. My daughter’s getting married at 11:00 this morning, and I’m going to be there to walk her down the aisle,” he told the police officer, as reported by People.

After driving for 40 kilometres, Jones decided to trek through the rest of the journey. He parked his car in a safe place and made the rest of the journey on foot. According to People, he only used his mobile phone flashlight to walk through the heavy debris and also climbed over two-metre-tall mounds of debris. “It was pitch black, no streetlights, no nothing. The devastation was beyond description, sections of roads washed out,” he told People.

Jones waved his flashlight and a red reflector he found during his trek to alert passing cars. A man driving a truck offered him a ride, and lo and behold, the driver turned out to be his former colleague. He finally reached his destination at 7.30 PM on Saturday.

The heart-touching story made it to social media, prompting many reactions.
