Goodbyes are never easy, whether it’s leaving behind parents, friends, or relatives. While we often think of farewells as a purely human experience, animals, too, can feel the sting of parting. A heartwarming video that’s going viral now captures just that: a dog looking utterly forlorn as he says goodbye to his grandma.

Meet Wally, a 4-year-old golden retriever from Boston, who clearly struggles with separation. In the video, Wally appears deeply sad, his eyes brimming with emotion, even when his grandma tries to cheer him with a forehead kiss. After some gentle coaxing and lots of love, Wally finally leans in to accept her kiss.

“Just so sad. Oh buddy, you are so sad. Grandma’s gonna see you on Thursday. Mama and Dad gonna go away for the weekend,” his grandma reassures him. She adds, “So tired, you was a swimmer today, that’s why. No one loves you like your grandma. Don’t let them fool you, okay?”

Wally’s owner, Julia Moriggi, told USA TODAY that he has been part of her family since he was an 8-week-old puppy and is “super emotional.” She explained that Wally reacts this way not just with his grandma, but whenever he parts from anyone he loves or leaves a place he enjoys. “This is typical Wally behavior so we weren’t surprised at all,” Moriggi said. “He wears his heart on his sleeve and loves hard, so he gets super sad to leave his favorite people.”

The video quickly captured hearts, racking up over 2.5 million views and countless comments from viewers charmed by the touching moment.

One viewer said, “The hardest part of love is always the goodbye. You can see in his eyes that home isn’t just a place, it’s the warmth of someone who makes you feel safe. Grandma isn’t just family; she’s his whole heart.”

Another commented, “The pure love of a dog reminds us that true happiness is not in luxury, but in the simple moments shared with those we love.” A third wrote, “I don’t know what humanity did to get the great love of a dog. We don’t deserve it, but I do enjoy their company.”
