The black diamond apple, priced at a staggering Rs 500 per piece, is a dark-hued marvel hailing exclusively from the mountainous region of Nyingchi in Tibet, China. But what sets this apple apart, making it worth its weight in gold?
The distinct deep violet colour is no accident. Nestled in the elevated city of Nyingchi, the apples are exposed to intense ultraviolet light during the day, while the temperature fluctuations between warm days and cool nights contribute to the unique exterior.
Unlike common apple trees that take a mere two to three years to mature, the black diamond apple demands patience. It requires a lengthy 8-year period to reach maturity, coupled with the challenges posed by the steep mountains where it thrives.
The high maintenance costs associated with cultivating this variant further limit its proliferation among locals. However, not every apple can make the cut – stringent quality control measures ensure that only the finest black diamond apples reach the market.
