Army Day is celebrated on January 15 each year to commemorate Lt. General (later Field Marshal) K.M. Cariappa taking over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1949. He succeeded General Sir Francis Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief.
Featuring parades and performances, Army Day festivities have traditionally been held at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment. However, since 2023, the military has hosted the event at its six operational commands on a rotational basis. There are seven total commands, with one reserved for training.
This year’s parade took place at the 11 Gorkha Regimental Center in Lucknow Cantonment, where troops from various regiments of the Indian Army displayed their might. The flypast by the Army Aviation Corps and the equestrian contingent of the cavalry are major attractions of the annual Army Day parade.
