Mira and Shahid Kapoor make an adorable couple. And did you know that Shahid quit a harmful habit after marrying Mira? When Karan Johar quizzed Mira about the same on Koffee with Karan season 5, Mira responded, “According to him, he has stopped everything because of me. I think he stopped smoking because of me.” Karan, in turn, praised the move and said, “That’s a good thing. Well done. Injurious to health.”

Shahid and Mira married in 2015 in a private ceremony and have two children.

How do positive changes like quitting smoking reflect on relationships?

Dr Santosh Bangar, senior consultant psychiatrist at Gleneagles Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai, said that when a partner tends to quit vices like smoking, drinking, or anger issues after getting into a relationship or marriage, it shows commitment, sincerity, and willingness to make a fresh start. “It shows that the partner values the other partner, respects, and is willing to change,” said Dr Bangar.

Quitting a habit isn’t easy; it takes self-awareness, emotional support, patience, and sometimes professional help.

“It also needs a non-judgmental environment where they feel encouraged, not pressured, or blamed for their habits. When such changes happen, trust and emotional connection strengthen, and the relationship blossoms further. It signals maturity and mutual respect, showing that the partner wants to build a healthier, more stable life together and is looking for a bright future,” said Dr Bangar.

However, Dr Bangar pointed out that the change must come from within, not just to please the other person.

“When done willingly, it becomes sustainable, meaningful, and brings happiness to both partners. One should not quit to impress the other partner or out of fear that your partner will leave you. Be responsible and make the decision, keeping your health in mind. Ultimately, it is not about perfection, but about growing into a better version of yourself for the relationship to thrive,” said Dr Bangar.
