Skincare alert: Why dermatologists call Multani mitti a ‘double-edged sword’

Always consider your skin type before using it, and when in doubt, consult with a skin expert

Multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s Earth, is a popular natural skincare remedy, especially in South Asia. It’s celebrated for its ability to cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the skin. However, from a dermatologist’s perspective, its use is not universally suitable for everyone.

Dr Jatin Mittal, co-founder, cosmetologist and skin expert from Abhivrit Aesthetics said, “Multani mitti can be a boon for individuals with oily and acne-prone skin due to its high absorbent properties. It effectively soaks up excess oil, unclogs pores, and removes impurities, which can help prevent acne breakouts. Its cooling effect also soothes inflammation and irritation associated with acne.”

However, using Multani mitti for an extended period can strip your skin’s natural oils resulting in dry and flaky skin especially when used extensively, said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai.

Dr Mittal too emphasised the need for caution, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin. “The same absorbent properties that make Multani mitti beneficial for oily skin can be detrimental to dry or sensitive skin types. It can lead to exacerbation of existing skin conditions like eczema or rosacea. For these skin types, using Multani mitti can cause more harm than good, potentially resulting in redness, flakiness, and a compromised skin barrier,” said Dr Mittal.

According to Dr Kapoor, Multani mitti is not a one-size-fits-all solution as everyone has different skin types, textures, allergies, and medical conditions.

Moreover, Dr Mittal advised that individuals with combination skin should also use Multani mitti selectively. “It’s essential to apply it only on the oily parts of the face, like the T-zone, and avoid dry areas. This targeted approach can help balance the skin without causing unnecessary dryness,” said Dr Mittal.

“Multani mitti can be a double-edged sword—it works wonders for oily, acne-prone skin, but can be too harsh for dry or sensitive skin. Always consider your skin type before using it, and when in doubt, consult with a skin expert,” added Dr Mittal.

So, while Multani mitti is a time-honoured ingredient with several benefits, its suitability varies depending on skin type. A dermatologist would advise that it’s crucial to understand your skin’s specific needs and consider these before incorporating Multani mitti into your skincare regimen. “Consulting with a skincare professional can help tailor its use effectively, ensuring that it enhances rather than harms your skin’s health,” said Dr Mittal.
