There are very many beauty hacks out there, and social media has only made them reach a wider audience. But, all such tips and tricks — as we have often stressed — must be taken with a pinch of salt as what may work for others may not necessarily do good to your hair, or skin. As such, when Roshni Chopra shared that she swears by potato juice for dark circles and puffy eyes, we immediately reached out to experts to learn more.
“#BeautyDIY – I swear by potato juice to brighten and depuff tired eyes. Here’s why it works,” Roshni wrote on Instagram.
“Potatoes are rich in vitamin C, K, and also B3. Add to this, they have niacin which is a known skin-brightening agent. That’s why, this remedy works particularly for pigmentation caused due to sun damage. You can also add cucumber juice to this mix,” she continued, adding, “It works really well!” Take a look.
How to make this concoction for external application?
*Clean and grate half a potato
*Squeeze out the juice and dip cotton pads in it
*Apply and leave on for 10-15 minutes!
“Do this often enough. It’s soothing and shows results too,” Roshni said.
However, while sharing that it works for her when “I have tired eyes or lack of sleep”, she cautioned, “I generally don’t have extreme dark circles. Please do consult a doctor if your dark circles are chronic.”
But does the hack actually work?
Potato juice contains azelaic acid, which is beneficial to reduce pigmentation. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove that it will help lighten dark circles, said Dr Vandana Punjabi, dermatologist and trichologist at Khar, and Nanavati Hospital.
“Home remedies should be avoided by people with sensitive skin or those who are prone to skin allergies as the skin around eyes is very sensitive and can flare their allergies. Dark circles, also called as ‘periorbital melanosis’, is multi-factorial. In many cases, it may also be associated with undereye puffiness, and malar festoons (swollen bags that appear under the eyes),” she mentioned.
Some other common causes of dark circles include hereditary issues, sun exposure, dehydration, eye allergies, lack of sleep, eye strain, iron deficiency anaemia, skin laxity, weight loss, skin ageing, and Acanthosis nigricans. “These factors need to be addressed while doing any sort of treatment. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist for treatment of dark circles who will help you to address the cause. Treatment can be in the form of combination therapies such as under eye creams, peels, laser, mesotherapy, fillers, etc,” said Dr Punjabi.
According to Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, vitamin C is well-known for its skin-brightening properties. “In addition, potatoes contain vitamin K, which is also found in cucumber skins, and is used to prevent blood clotting. This aids in the reduction of veinous, purple bruises around the eyes. Potatoes also include vitamin B3, a lack of which creates dark circles — but this is more of a reason to eat potatoes rather than apply it topically,” Dr Kapoor told indianexpress.com.
