We hear so much about optimum nutrition for not just your fitness goals like fat loss and weight loss but also for your gut health. In fact, hydration through water as well as high-water content foods is mostly recommended as a good way to boost one’s health. Yogic Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev also commented on the need to incorporate high-water content foods like cucumber in one’s diet for ‘healthful living’.
“Cucumber increases hydration. It is always best that we eat water through the food that we consume such as high-water content foods. Rather than simply drinking water. Strengthens bone density. Very high in vitamin K. Promotes gut health. Helps manage blood sugar. And of course, your weight because it fills you mostly with very rich water. It also has proteins that could be somewhat cancer-preventive. It improves heart health,” said Sadhguru in a video ‘Yogi’s Breakfast for Weight Loss and Heart Health’ posted on his Instagram.
Taking a cue, we decided to understand if it’s a good idea to include high-water content foods on a regular basis.
Sushma PS, chief dietician, Jindal Naturecure institute, Bangalore said that vegetables and fruits, with their high-water content, serve as natural hydrators, replenishing your body’s fluids and electrolytes. “Their juicy and refreshing nature not only quenches your thirst but also helps in maintaining optimal hydration levels throughout the day,” said Sushma.
Fruits are not only delicious but also packed with essential nutrients. They provide a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre, contributing to overall nutrition. Incorporating a wide variety of fruits in your diet ensures that you receive a diverse range of these vital nutrients, supporting your body’s functions and promoting vitality,” Sushma mentioned.
Shruti Bhardwaj, senior dietician, Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Ahmedabad also concurred that consuming foods with high water content can help prevent dehydration. Another example is corn which is a starchy grain that provides essential vitamins and minerals. “It contains dietary fibre, which aids digestion and promotes a healthy gut. Corn also offers beneficial antioxidants and is a good source of folate, thiamine, and vitamin C,” Bhardwaj mentioned.
Additionally, high-water content foods are generally low in calories and fat while being high in fibre, making them an excellent choice for weight management and maintaining healthy body weight. “A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, certain types of cancer, and obesity. The antioxidants present in fruits and vegetables help protect against cellular damage caused by harmful free radicals,” said Dt Aarti Nath, clinical dietician and nutritionist, Paras Health, Udaipur.
However, experts urge that it is always advisable to speak with your nutritionist or dietician before adding a new food to your diet as the individual responses to different foods can vary.
